Tibetans today celebrated the 21st birthday of Gedun Choekyi Nyima, who was taken away by Chinese authorities shortly after the Dalai Lama declared him as the second highest Tibetan Buddhist religious leader in May 1995, amid calls for "release" of the monk.
Though Nymie and his family have not been heard from since, China, which selected another boy Gyaltsen Norbu as the reincarnated 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet, had said in March that they were living "an ordinary life" in Tibet.
To celebrate his birthday, more than 20 acclaimed Tibetan artists, including Tenzin Dakpa and Tamdin Tsetan, will each create a portrait of the imagined face of the Panchen Lama as a 21-year-old man.
One of the pieces of art will be chosen as a new emblem for campaign materials calling for the Panchen Lama's release, the Tibetan Women's Association (TWA) said.
Kirti Dolkar Lhamo, president of the Tibetan Women's Association, said that the images used till now to remember Panchen are of a young child.
The TWA called on United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and influential international bodies to press for "release" of the Panchen Lama.
